Examples of Topic sentence, Topic sentence and Concluding sentence.
Topic ASPIRIN.
Aspirin can be a fatal poison. People are used to taking aspirin whenever they feel pain. It is true that aspirin is an efficacious pain-killer for example in headache cases. However, aspirin is like any other medicine can be dangerously harmful. Any unregulated use of it may result into the damage to the lining of the stomach, prolonged bleeding time, nausea, vomiting, ulcers, liver damage, and hepatitis. It is scientifically proven that excessive use of aspirin turns it into a toxin. It's toxic effects are Kidney Damage, severe metabolic derangements, respiratory and central nervous system effects, strokes, fatal hemorrhages of the brain, intestines and lungs and eventually death. Thus, the careful and regulated use of aspirin is most advisable so as not to turn into a deadly poison. In other words, it is necessary to use the aspirin properly or else it will bring to death.

Compound,Complex and Compound Complex.
Simple
Definition: A sentence with only one independent clause (also known as a main clause).
The simple sentence is one of the four basic sentence structures. The other structures are the compound sentence, the complex sentence, and the compound-complex sentence.
Examples:
(1) "Children are all foreigners."
(2) "Mother died today."
(3) "Of course, no man is entirely in his right mind at any time."
(4) "Early to rise and early to bed makes a male healthy and wealthy and dead."
(5) "I'd rather be a lightning rod than a seismograph."
CompoundDefinition: A sentence that contains at least two independent clauses.
Compound sentences can be formed in three ways:
(1) using coordinating conjunctions;
(2) using the semicolon, either with or without conjunctive adverbs;
(3) on occasion, using the colon.
Examples:
(1) "It was a bright cold day in April, and the clocks were striking thirteen.."
(2) "The drought had lasted now for ten million years, and the reign of the terrible lizards had long since ended."
(3) "A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on."
(4) "Any jackass can kick down a barn, but it takes a good carpenter to build one."
(5) "Tell the truth, work hard, and come to dinner on time."
ComplexDefinition: A sentence that contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause.
"[D]ependent clauses cannot be sentences on their own. They depend on an independent clause to support them. The independent clause in a complex sentence carries the main meaning, but either clause may come first. When the dependent clause comes first, it is always followed by a comma."
"Complex sentences can offer dramatic development, extending a metaphor, as Melville's Captain Ahab reminds us: 'The path to my fixed purpose is laid on iron rails, on which my soul is grooved to run.'"
Examples:
(1) "Although volume upon volume is written to prove slavery a very good thing, we never hear of the man who wishes to take the good of it by being a slave himself."
(2) "When we remember we are all mad, the mysteries disappear and life stands explained."
(3) "I think we ought to have as great a regard for religion as we can, so as to keep it out of as many things as possible."
(4) "Courage is rightly esteemed the first of human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others."
(5) "Maturity is a bitter disappointment for which no remedy exists, unless laughter can be said to remedy anything."
Compound Complex
Definition: A sentence with two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
The compound-complex sentence is one of the four basic sentence structures. The other structures are the simple sentence, the compound sentence, and the complex sentence.
Examples:
(1) "In America everybody is of the opinion that he has no social superiors, since all men are equal, but he does not admit that he has no social inferiors, for, from the time of Jefferson onward, the doctrine that all men are equal applies only upwards, not downwards."
(2) "I believe entertainment can aspire to be art, and can become art, but if you set out to make art you're an idiot."
(3) "Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
(4) "We operate under a jury system in this country, and as much as we complain about it, we have to admit that we know of no better system, except possibly flipping a coin."
(5) "For in the end, freedom is a personal and lonely battle; and one faces down fears of today so that those of tomorrow might be engaged."

LIFE IS LIKE A CUP OF COFFEE.
The power of words.
A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.
Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups - porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite - telling them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: "If you noticed, all the nice looking expensive cups have been taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.
Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases it is just more expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups... And then you began eyeing each other's cups.
Now consider this: Life is the coffee; the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain Life, and the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live.
Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee. Savor the coffee, not the cups! The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.

Kentucky Coffee
While the Irish coffee and the Spanish coffee dominate the realm of alcoholic coffee drinks, good American bourbon often gets overlooked as an ingredient. Bourbons offer big vanilla and caramel overtones and some even offer notes of cinnamon and spice, making it a perfect complement to coffee. If you are looking for a new winter warmer this year, look no further than Kentucky Coffee. Featuring the natural spiciness of Wild Turkey 101 and sweetened with just a touch of Wild Turkey's American Honey liqueur this all-American coffee drink will keep you warm on a cold winters night.
Ingredients:
•1 oz Wild Turkey 101 bourbon
•1/2 oz Wild Turkey American Honey liqueur
•Hot coffee to fill
•Whipped cream (optional)
Preparation:
1.In a coffee mug, add bourbon and liqueur
2.Top with hot coffee.
3.Add whipped cream if desired. Serve and enjoy.

Blueberry Tea
The name of this tea is deceiving, there are no blueberries or blueberry-flavored ingredients, and instead it is simply a really good warm drink that is very aromatic. Using a brandy snifter helps the warm orange, apricot and tea fragrances combine to delight the senses. The glass is further accented when you place the orange wheel inside the glass and allow it to float flat on top of the tea. Maran Illustrated Bartending has a few more great warm tea and cider drinks.
Ingredients:
•3/4 oz Grand Marnier
•3/4 oz amaretto
•orange pekoe tea
•orange wheel for garnish
Preparation:
1.Pour the Grand Marnier and amaretto into a preheated brandy snifter.
2.Fill the snifter two-thirds of the way to the top with orange pekoe tea.
3.Garnish with an orange wheel.
4.Stir the drink.

Adult Hot Chocolate
This is the simplest and most common way to spike hot chocolate because all you need to do is add a little peppermint schnapps to the cocoa. Not only does it add a little alcoholic warmth, but the added peppermint brings some depth to the flavor, making it just a touch sweeter as well. One garnish I find almost essential for this drink around the holidays are those mini candy canes. Just hang one on the side of the glass and allow it to melt in the warmth for an even more minty touch.
According to The Bartender's Black Book you may also hear this drink referred to as a Peppermint Kiss, Cocoanapps, or Snuggler.

Midnight Snowstorm
This recipe for a Midnight Snowstorm is very similar to a Hot Peppermint Patty, using crème de menthe in place of the harsher peppermint schnapps. This substitution leaves the minty, chocolate flavor but does so in a very smooth, creamy way. Use white crème de menthe inside the drink and add green crème de menthe on top of the whipped cream for a little color.
Ingredients:
•2 oz white crème de menthe
•hot chocolate
•1/2 oz green crème de menthe
•whipped cream
Preparation:
1.Pour white crème de menthe and hot chocolate into an Irish coffee glass.
2.Top with whipped cream.
3.Drizzle the green crème de menthe on top.

Chocolate Kiss
This is a wonderful spiked hot chocolate mixed drink that will get you warmed up in no time. It's a variation of the simple Adult Hot Chocolate that adds a touch of coffee liqueur for a deeper flavor profile that is quite delightful. In keeping with the name, I like to top this one with a healthy mound of whipped cream that is crowned by simply placing a Hershey's Kiss chocolate on top.
For a drink that is a little stronger, replace the coffee liqueur with one of the espresso-infused vodkas like Three Olives or Van Gogh.

How to Make Hot Chocolate (Preparation Techniques for European Drinking Chocolate / Sipping Chocolate)
When asked how to make hot chocolate, some people answer, "Just add water." However, unlike hot cocoa, rich and creamy homemade hot chocolate (a.k.a. "drinking chocolate" or "sipping chocolate") takes genuine effort to make.
Browsing hot chocolate recipes (and comparing them to hot cocoa recipes) will help you with specific hot chocolate concoctions, but this guide to hot chocolate is more about the basic skills behind making perfect hot chocolate. Use the insider tips below to get from a block of chocolate to steaming hot, divinely delicious cups of drinking chocolate every time.
Drinking chocolate is typically much richer and thicker than hot chocolate.
Lindsey Goodwin
Chop the Chocolate
1.Place a pre-measured chunk of chocolate into a food processor. As demonstrated in this how to make hot chocolate video, the amount of amount of chocolate you can use is fairly flexible.
2.Place the food processor’s chopping vessel (complete with blade) into the fridge.
3.Once the chocolate and food processor are chilled, remove them.
4.Immediately chop the chocolate in the food processor in five-second “bursts” until it is finely and evenly chopped. (This will prevent uneven melting and scorching later.)
5.Optional: Blend sugar, cocoa powder and/or a dash of salt in with the chopped chocolate.
Melt the Chocolate
1.Heat milk over medium-low in a small saucepan or double broiler. (Note: Substitute milk with cream for a thicker beverage, or add a splash of water for a less creamy, subtler quaff.)
2.Stir often. (Note: The creamier your mixture, the more often it needs to be stirred.)
3.Before the milk reaches boiling, remove it from heat. (Warning: Failing to remove the milk before it reaches boiling will alter the texture and flavor of the milk for the worse. Never allow your milk or drinking chocolate to boil.)
4.In a separate pan, pour a few tablespoons of hot milk over the chopped chocolate.
5.Stir until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
Heat the Chocolate
1.Gradually add more milk, stirring as you go.
2.Return the mixture to medium-low heat.
3.Stir constantly for about two minutes, adding other ingredients (such as vanilla extract) if desired.
4.Remove from heat.
“Rest” the Hot Chocolate
Allow the drinking chocolate to sit for at least ten minutes. (Note: This allows its flavor and texture to develop more fully. It can be “rested” for up to two nights in the fridge before the next step.)
Froth the Hot Chocolate
1.Return to medium-low heat.
2.Bring to a simmer.
3.Whisk rapidly until the surface of the cocoa is covered in foam. (Note: Alternately, you can use a molinillo to whisk the cocoa.)
Serve the Hot Chocolate
1.Pre-warm your cups. (Note: Deep mugs are ideal for more watery drinking chocolates, while smaller cups are better for creamier ones.)
2.Ladle your drinking chocolate into the cups.
3.Garnish with cinnamon sticks, ground spices, melted caramel, mini marshmallows, grated orange zest, whipped cream or other toppings.
4.Serve with a spoon.

Earp's Steak and Dinner Sauce Serving Suggestions
- Earp's is all the "helper" your hamburger needs.
- Earp's brings out the natural flavor of foods, it does not mask or hide it. Just before your hamburger, chicken or steak has finished cooking, brush on a light coating of Earp's.
- A little of Earp's added to gravies, soups and stews, home made or otherwise, creates something very special.
- Earp's sauce is superb as a marinade. For best results, you will want to thin it down some.
- Right out of the bottle, use Earp's as a chip dip.
- Not all that fond of sauces available at your favorite restaurant? Pack a bottle of Earp's with you. There is no law that says you can't.
- Earp's adds real zest to corned beef hash.
- You MUST try it on scrambled eggs!
- On sea food and fresh water foods Earp's can't be beat. Even set your clam chowder apart from others by adding Earp's.
- Try dipping deep fried onion rings in Earp's sauce.
- Meat ball dishes are greatly enhanced with the addition of Earp's sauce.
- Add to taco's? You bet!
- Add it to a "Bloody Mary"? It's excellent.
- Western style pizza? Bingo! Add Earp's to the basic sauce.
- It works really great with sauerkraut.
- Earp's sauce is naturally shelf stable, even after opening the bottle. Take it camping, leave the refrigerator at home.
- Need a little help in the meat loaf department? You won't after using Earp's.
Improved McDonalds Hamburgers.
Does anyone know exactly what is in a
McDonald's hamburger?
It's what the Gun Fight at the O.K. Corral was really all about. Bet you've never seen a fat gun fighter, have you?
McDonald's hamburger?
As head of the Food Lab here at Earp's Western Foods, my job does not allow me to butter anything up. I tell it like it is.
We are asked the question several times a week. Other than a whole lot of advertising, I haven't a clue what is in a McDonald's Hamburger. Nor can I justify the time to disect one.
I will state this however. If I don't know what is in it or, it looks like something that has been used before, I WON'T eat it!
I do know this for a fact however and our customers keep telling us so. A little Earp's Steak and Dinner Sauce added to a Big Mac is a major improvement. In fact, a little Earp's added to any hamburger will turn it in to something more edible and digestable.
In the opinion of the McDonalds folks and as they recently expressed in a communication to MSN News. They contacted 100's of Nutritional EXPERTS and the majority of those they contacted believed that a steady diet of "fast foods" was a healthy choice.
MSN News proved otherwise but, if you want to swallow what McDonalds would have you believe, that is up to you. By the way, I have some waterfront property to sell you... The ingredients in Earp's Steak Sauce are an actual aid to digestion and you are going to need it, living out of fast food restaurants.
So, the next time you head out to your favorite fast food restaurant to force feed yourself another dose of McFat, McCholesterol and McSugar fix, (hamburger, frenchfries, battered fish, salad) do your heart and waist line a favor,
- At least put some
- Earp's Steak and Dinner Sauce
- on that stuff!
It's what the Gun Fight at the O.K. Corral was really all about. Bet you've never seen a fat gun fighter, have you?
- Ask your doctor and find out that Earp's Steak Sauce is right for you. And if you are serious, here is our Nutritional FACTS!

Western Baked Potato
Ingredients:
1/4 Cup Sour Cream
1TBL plus 1/2 tsp Earp's Steak Sauce
Method:
Do your baked potatoes turn out waxy? If so, bet you blamed the potato didn't you. Certainly a lot of folks know the secret to perfect fluffy bakers, but some don't.
While the above recipe is pretty simple, just mix the ingredients together, lets provide you with a quick lesson on bakers.
Pre-heat your oven to 400 deg. F. Wash potato and then with a knife score a straight line on one side. (about 1/16th inch deep) Place into the oven, scored side up and bake (here is the secret) for at least, 1 hour and 10 minutes at 400 degrees. If you are baking more than 1 or 2 potatoes, your total baking time will have to be increased.
Micro waving a baked potato is disgusting. However, you can successfully cut down on your baking time by "nuking" for a short period of time. (no more than 5 minutes on high for a large baker) One thing to keep in mind if you use your nuker. You can start a baked potato in the micro-wave, but you CAN NOT finish one.
Add a dab of butter to your perfect fluffy potato and a portion of the above mixture. You will be pleasantly supprised.

Western Beef or Pork Ribs "Dem Bones" (Fast)
Ingredtients:
2 each Beef/Pork Rib Racks
2 TBS. Cider Vinegar
Earp's WESTERN Steak and Dinner Sauce
Method:
First trim any excess fat. Next, if you have the patience, peel off the underside membrane. You don't necessarily have to do this but, if you have the time and patience, it's worth it. (note: this process takes a little practice)
Now, place them into a large sauce pan. Depending on the size of your sauce pan, you may have to cut the racks in half or more so that they will fit in there.
Cover the ribs with water, add 2 TBS. of cider vinegar, (you could add your own seasonings as well) bring to a boil, cover and lower heat to a simmer. Simmer (perhaps up to 15-20 min) until when pierced with a fork, they slide off.
Remove them from sauce pan and rinse under cold running water. At this point, your ribs are all BUT finished cooking. If you want to cook them off at a later time, either on the BBQ or in the oven, you must stop the cooking process. If so, after the cold water treatment, wrap them up or they could dry out on you.
Ready to finish cooking and serve? Pre-heat oven to 325 deg. With a knife, score between bone sections. Brush on a coating of Earp's sauce on both sides and set into your glass or stainless steel roasting dish. DON'T use an aluminum pan! Most all sauces contain vinegar and will etch aluminum into your food. Earp's Steak and Dinner Sauce contains a very sophisticated blend of vinegars.
Have the rest of your dinner in mind as after you place your racks into the oven, they are not going to be in there for very long. You will have to use your judgment at this point for the final cooking time. You may also want to brush on more Earp's during the final cook off. In addition, we will sometimes cover the racks with a sheet of foil for the first 10 or so minutes of final cooking. (helps to keep them moist)
If you are going to finish cooking on the BBQ... It works great. But, as you know your BBQ better than us, you are on your own in this department.
Ribs are generally served with extra sauce on the side.

General Frank's
Ingredients:
1 large bonless chicken breast
2 regular size cans Swanson's chicken broth. (low sodium)
2 cups long grain rice
1 bottle of Earp's
3 large eggs
Small quantities of assorted vegetables: (carrot, onion, petite peas, zucchini squash, broccoli, ect. for stir fried rice)
1 tsp. salt
All vegetable cooking oil
Corn starch
Red and blue food coloring
Method:
Cut chicken breast into 1/2" x 1" strips. In a mixing bowl, combine 1 egg with a small amout of water. Place strips of the chicken breast into the egg mixture, stirring to coat evenly. Remove pieces from bowl and dredge in corn starch.
Heat a skillet along with just enough vegetable oil to fry off your chicken strips. Once heated, place strips into skillet and fry aprox. 1 minute per side or until done. Remove from skillet onto a plate and allow any excess oil to drain off. Set aside in refrigerator.
Place rice (not rinsed) into a 2 quart sauce pan (one with a good lid). Add enough chicken broth to cover the rice by 1". Add 1 tsp. salt. If 2 cans of broth did not cover the rice by 1" add a little water. Bring to a boil, cover and set burner to a very low setting and cook for 20 minutes. Do NOT remove lid at any time during these 20 minutes! At 20 minutes, remove from heat.
In a mixing bowl beat well 1 egg, 2 TBS cold water and a few drops of red food coloring. In a seperate bowl, do the same but with the blue food coloring.
Heat a frying pan with 2 TBS. vegetable oil to medium high heat. Place in 1/3 of chopped vegetables and saute' until cooked. Add the mixture of red coloring and continue cooking until it bubbles. Now add 1/3 of the cooked rice and fold in. Place that batch of rice and vegetables on to dinner plates so as to form the first of a 3 part wedge patterns on each plate. Follow the same procedure now for the blue food coloring mixture. Now, saute' off the remaining vegetables, add the remaining rice and complete the wedge pattern on each plate.
The finishing touch:
Note: I have tried just about every kind of sauce in this recipe. Because of it's superb cooking qualities, ONLY Earp's works.
Pour 1/2 bottle of Earp's sauce into a frying pan and heat to a slow bubbling boil. Add the pre-cooked chicken strips and stir to coat. Continue cooking until the sauce starts to caramelize (candies). When completed, place equal quantities of chicken strips into the center of each dinner plate.
You have just made a complete - delicious chicken dinner with ALL the nutritional requirements for healthy eating.... AND, it's very patriotic!

The McDonald's History
History: The McDonald’s Story.
The birth of McDonald's began with Raymond Albert Kroc.
Ray Kroc was the exclusive distributor of a milk shake maker called the Multimixer. Meanwhile, two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald owned and ran a hamburger restaurant in San Bernadino, California, in the 1950s. Ray Kroc heard how well the McDonald brothers were doing using his Multimixers to serve their customers. He met up with them and acquired the franchising right from them to run McDonald's restaurants.
A great success story was in the making. In 1955, Ray Kroc founded the McDonald's Corporation and opened the first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois. In 1961, he bought out the McDonald brothers.
And the rest, as they say, is history. McDonald's grew into the largest restaurant organisation in the world. Today, there are more than 30,000 McDonald's restaurants serving 47 million customers each day in over 100 countries. Ray Kroc died in 1984 but his legacy is very much alive. His success story continues with McDonald's families of employees, franchisees and suppliers. His commitment, dedication and achievements continue to live on at McDonald's restaurants across the world.

Simple Present Tense
The simple present tense in English is used to describe an action that is regular, true or normal.
We use the present tense:
1. For repeated or regular actions in the present time period.
I take the train to the office.
The train to Berlin leaves every hour.
John sleeps eight hours every night during the week.
2. For facts.
The President of The USA lives in The White House.
A dog has four legs.
We come from Switzerland.
3. For habits.
I get up early every day.
Carol brushes her teeth twice a day.
They travel to their country house every weekend.
4. For things that are always / generally true.
It rains a lot in winter.
The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace.
They speak English at work.
Verb Conjugation & Spelling
We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without the TO).
In general, in the third person we add 'S' in the third person.
Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence
I / you / we / they speak / learn English at home
he / she / it speaks / learns English at home
The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb:
1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person.
go – goes
catch – catches
wash – washes
kiss – kisses
fix – fixes
buzz – buzzes
2. For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES.
marry – marries
study – studies
carry – carries
worry – worries
NOTE: For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S.
play – plays
enjoy – enjoys
say – says
Negative Sentences in the Simple Present Tense
To make a negative sentence in English we normally use Don't or Doesn't with all verbs EXCEPT To Be and Modal verbs (Can, might, should etc.).
Affirmative: You speak French.
Negative: You don't speak French.
You will see that we add don't between the subject and the verb. We use Don't when the subject is I, you, we or they.
Affirmative: He speaks German.
Negative: He doesn't speak German.
When the subject is he, she or it, we add doesn't between the subject and the verb to make a negative sentence. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the negative sentence. We will see the reason why below.
Negative Contractions
Don't = Do not
Doesn't = Does not
I don't like meat = I do not like meat.
There is no difference in meaning though we normally use contractions in spoken English.
Word Order of Negative Sentences
The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in English in the Present Tense using Don't or Doesn't.
Subject don't/doesn't Verb* The Rest of the sentence
I / you / we / they don't have / buy
eat / like etc. cereal for breakfast
he / she / it doesn't
*Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive without TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is just the have part.
Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed) and it begins with TO. For example: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak etc.
Examples of Negative Sentences with Don't and Doesn't:
You don't speak Arabic.
John doesn't speak Italian.
We don't have time for a rest.
It doesn't move.
They don't want to go to the party.
She doesn't like fish.
Questions in the Simple Present Tense
To make a question in English we normally use Do or Does. It has no translation in Spanish though it is essential to show we are making a question. It is normally put at the beginning of the question.
Affirmative: You speak English.
Question: Do you speak English?
You will see that we add DO at the beginning of the affirmative sentence to make it a question. We use Do when the subject is I, you, we or they.
Affirmative: He speaks French.
Question: Does he speak French?
When the subject is he, she or it, we add DOES at the beginning to make the affirmative sentence a question. Notice that the letter S at the end of the verb in the affirmative sentence (because it is in third person) disappears in the question. We will see the reason why below.
We DON'T use Do or Does in questions that have the verb To Be or Modal Verbs (can, must, might, should etc.)
Word Order of Questions with Do and Does
The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using Do or Does.
Do/Does Subject Verb* The Rest of the sentence
Do I / you / we / they have / need
want etc. a new bike?
Does he / she / it
*Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive without TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is just the have part.
Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed) and it begins with TO. For example: to have, to eat, to go, to live, to speak etc.
Examples of Questions with Do and Does:
Do you need a dictionary?
Does Mary need a dictionary?
Do we have a meeting now?
Does it rain a lot in winter?
Do they want to go to the party?

Don't = Do not
Doesn't = Does not
I don't like meat = I do not like meat.

*Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive without TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To have it is just the have part.

How do we use the Simple Past Tense?
We use the simple past tense to talk about an action or a situation - an event - in the past. The event can be short or long.
Here are some short events with the simple past tense:
The car exploded at 9.30am yesterday.
She went to the door.
We did not hear the telephone.
Did you see that car?
The action is in the past.
Here are some long events with the simple past tense:
I lived in Bangkok for 10 years.
The Jurassic period lasted about 62 million years.
We did not sing at the concert.
Did you watch TV last night?
The action is in the past.
Notice that it does not matter how long ago the event is: it can be a few minutes or seconds in the past, or millions of years in the past. Also it does not matter how long the event is. It can be a few milliseconds (car explosion) or millions of years (Jurassic period). We use the simple past tense when:
•the event is in the past
•the event is completely finished
•we say (or understand) the time and/or place of the event
In general, if we say the time or place of the event, we must use the simple past tense; we cannot use the present perfect. Here are some more examples:
•I lived in that house when I was young.
•He didn't like the movie.
•What did you eat for dinner?
•John drove to London on Monday.
•Mary did not go to work yesterday.
•Did you play tennis last week?
•I was at work yesterday.
•We were not late (for the train).
•Were you angry?
Note that when we tell a story, we usually use the simple past tense. We may use the past continuous tense to "set the scene", but we almost always use the simple past tense for the action. Look at this example of the beginning of a story:
"The wind was howling around the hotel and the rain was pouring down. It was cold. The door opened and James Bond entered. He took off his coat, which was very wet, and ordered a drink at the bar. He sat down in the corner of the lounge and quietly drank his..."
This page shows the use of the simple past tense to talk about past events. But note that there are some other uses for the simple past tense, for example in conditional or if sentences.

About Me essay.
My name is Karina. I was born and raised in the beautiful country of Kazahstan, which is located in the Central Asia and was the part of the former Soviet Union. I finished High School there and attended four-year college for about two years. I was majoring in Customs Law, but I didn't finish it, because my mother won a lottery Green-card (permanent residence in USA) and we decided to move to America. I have only one older brother. His name is Ulan. Hi is 30 years old. We are very close to each other, although he is four years older than I am. Unfortunately, he is not here with us right know, because according to the US law, children over 21 years old are not eligible for the green- card, so he stayed in Kazahstan. My father died a year ago of stroke. He was just 54 years old. I still can not believe that he is gone. I still miss him and he will always be in my heart.
I and my mother came to the United States four years ago. We live together in Brooklyn. She is very strong and good person. She is the one who influenced me to go to the college. English is not my first language, so I was afraid that I wouldn't do well at school. She kept saying to me that I'll do well and that she believes in me. And here I'm at the LaGuardia Community College today, majoring in Paralegal studies. This is my third semester here. Now I feel more confident about myself, because I passed all courses that I have been taking and received good grades and try to do my best to keep doing it.
I'm a very honest and friendly person. I enjoy reading interesting books, watching action movies, hanging out with my friends. I like to play on piano, to play big tennis and go to the gym. Unfortunately, I don't have much time to hanging out with my friends now, because I sacrificed my free time to learn. But it worth it in order to be proud of myself in the future and achieve my goal, which is to get an Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies. LaGuardia Community College seems to be a good college, where one can get the best education and the necessary skills in their majors. Professors are very educated, friendly and hard working people, who do their best to teach us in order to become educated students. I really like this college and the professors and I'm glad that I have chosen this college among the others. I hope after one year I will get my degree in Paralegal Studies, find a good job as a Paralegal in the law firm. I'm trying to do my best to study hard and to make good grades, because education is very important to me. At this moment my goal is to graduate from LaGuardia Community College and I hope I will get the best knowledge's and the necessary skills that will shape me in my life.

Pan-Seared Sea Scallops
Pan-seared sea scallops are among the most popular seafood preparations out there, and one of my favorite dishes to cook. With flesh firm enough to withstand the high heats needed to form a caramelized "crust" on the surface, but with none of the claws, heads and other weird appendages that lobsters and crabs insist on having, these simple bivalves are truly a "no-muss, no-fuss" shellfish. This tutorial shows you, step-by-step, how to make pan-seared sea scallops. You can also learn more about shopping for fresh scallops, like what kind of scallops are the best for pan-searing, and how to avoid buying scallops that taste like soap.
Also, you can check out these two new videos on sea scallops. The first one demonstrates how to sear sea scallops. And the second one discusses what to look for when you're buying sea scallops.
Finally, there's the matter of sauces. A great sauce to serve with seared scallops is a simple beurre blanc sauce, which is made with butter and wine and a few other ingredients. For more sauce ideas, check out these sauces for fish and seafood.

More New Culinary Terms
In the culinary arts, there's pretty much a word for everything. Did you ever cook something in a pan, or roast something in the oven, and see those little toasty bits at the bottom of the pan? Yep, you guessed it — there's a word for that. It's called "fond," and it's loaded with flavor.
You can find out more about that, along with a lot of other cooking terms, in the glossary of culinary terms, which has been updated again with 28 new entries.

Potato Gnocchi Recipe
Potato gnocchi (pronounced NYO-kee) are a kind of Italian dumpling made with potatoes and flour. Light and fluffy, gnocchi are like little pillows. You can serve gnocchi with any of your favorite pasta sauces, or with a simple sauce of melted butter and grated cheese.Gnocchi are relatively simple to make. First the potatoes are cooked, either by steaming or boiling. Steaming is best because it leaves the potatoes drier, which produces fluffier gnocchi. Then the cooked potatoes are processed in a potato ricer or a food mill. The goal here is to achieve a smooth, lump-free texture without overworking the starches. The cooked potato mixture is then combined with flour to form a dough. Finally, the dough is shaped, cut into individual dumplings and boiled. Here's a Potato Gnocchi Recipe.
Sauces for gnocchi are the same sauces you'd serve with pasta — a simple tomato sauce is perfect, or for a heartier meal you can go with a meat sauce instead. Other traditional gnocchi sauces include a creamy Gorgonzola sauce or a fresh pesto.

New Culinary Arts Terms
When you buy a whole roasting or frying chicken at the store, you usually find a little bag of giblets stuffed into the body cavity of the bird. Some people use those giblets to make gravy or stuffing, and others just throw them away. What about you? And did you know that one of the items in that bag isn't technically a giblet?
Also, there's something else about that bag of innards that might strike you as peculiar. You can find out more about what that is, along with a lot of other cooking terms, in the glossary of culinary terms, which has been updated again with 22 new entries.
